What is Microsoft Fabric?

Microsoft Fabric is Microsoft’s SaaS data platform. It combines data integration, data engineering, data warehousing, data science, real-time analytics and Power BI in one environment with shared storage, OneLake. That way, reports, planning and AI all work from the same data foundation instead of copies.

What
A data platform delivered as software as a service: integration, engineering, warehouse, data science, real-time analytics and Power BI with shared storage.
For whom
Companies whose data lives in several systems and whose reports are assembled by hand today.
Result
One shared data foundation for reporting, planning and AI, with central governance through Microsoft Purview.
Who
NAVAX, Microsoft Solutions Partner for Business Applications, with consulting for data and AI.
Why NAVAX
NAVAX implements Dynamics 365 and Business Central itself and therefore knows the systems your data comes from.
Challenges

Three problems Microsoft Fabric solves.

These are the concerns companies bring to NAVAX when it comes to their data. Next to each one: what changes with Fabric.

  1. Every department has its own numbers

    Today

Sales, controlling and production pull their data from different systems and arrive at different results. Central reporting happens in Excel.

  2. The data warehouse is hard to extend

    Today

A traditional data warehouse, for example on Oracle, needs its own servers, its own licenses and a lot of specialist knowledge. Every extension turns into a project.

  3. You want AI, but the data isn’t ready

    Today

Copilot and AI agents only give answers as good as the data behind them. If access rights and data quality are unclear, AI remains an experiment.

  2. Starting point

A data warehouse on Oracle is to move to Microsoft Fabric.

  3. Approach developed

NAVAX developed the migration approach: lakehouse, open formats, governance with Purview.

  4. Path

The move is planned in stages and starts with a pilot project.

Process

How your Fabric project works.

Four phases from the first use case to replacing the old data warehouse.

  1. 1

    Pilot project

We start with one area and a clear use case. You see real results with your own data early on.

    What you have afterwards

A working use case and an architecture that further areas build on.

  2. 2

    Expanding to further areas

More data sources and departments are added, based on the architecture from the pilot.

    What you have afterwards

More departments report from the same data foundation.

  3. 3

    Scaling

Governance, roles and capacity are set up for the whole company.

    What you have afterwards

Controlled access and a capacity that matches actual usage.

  4. 4

    Full migration

Your existing data warehouse is replaced, and all reports run through Fabric.

    What you have afterwards

One data platform instead of two maintained in parallel.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Microsoft Fabric.

What people often ask before a first conversation. If your question is missing, ask NAVAX directly.

What is Microsoft Fabric?

Microsoft Fabric is a SaaS data platform from Microsoft that brings every step of working with data into one environment. It includes data integration, data engineering, data warehousing, data science, real-time analytics and Power BI. All data lives in OneLake, one shared storage layer for the whole company.

How much does Microsoft Fabric cost?

The cost depends on the Fabric capacity you book and on how many people create and view reports. Microsoft bills capacity pay-as-you-go or as a reservation. NAVAX clarifies which size fits you in the first conversation, based on your data volumes and number of users.

Is Microsoft Fabric free?

For testing, yes: Microsoft offers a free trial capacity that runs for 60 days. For production use, you need a paid capacity.

Does Microsoft Fabric replace Power BI?

No, Power BI is part of Microsoft Fabric. Your existing reports and dashboards keep running; Fabric adds the preparation, storage and analysis of the data behind them.

What is OneLake?

OneLake is the central data store of Microsoft Fabric, comparable to OneDrive for company data. Each organization has exactly one OneLake, all Fabric workloads access it, and data does not have to be copied multiple times.

What do we need to use Microsoft Fabric?

You need a Microsoft tenant, which you already have with Microsoft 365 or Azure, and a Fabric capacity or the trial. You do not need your own servers, because Fabric runs as SaaS in the Microsoft cloud.

Can we move our Oracle data warehouse to Microsoft Fabric?

Yes. NAVAX recommends a step-by-step path: first a pilot project, then expanding to further areas, then scaling and finally the full migration. That way, you do not have to switch everything at once.

Can we use Business Central data in Microsoft Fabric?

Yes, Business Central can be connected to Fabric as a data source. NAVAX clarifies which approach fits in the first conversation, based on your environment and your reports.
